Well, when it comes to the reasons why we do the things we do, the most complicated answer is usually the correct one.

In recent decades, the government has spent billions of dollars on gene research with the goal of trying to explain how the genes we were born with express themselves in our everyday lives.

Psychologists are optimistic — though cautiously — these advancements in gene research will help us understand ourselves better.

It was not so long ago that the big wide outdoors was the mainstay of children looking for a little imagination and adventure outside the home and school.

However, in recent years, there has been a departure from outdoors and nature and tendency towards television and video games. This trend has been linked to growing concern regarding children’s nutrition, health and well-being.

In an effort to raise attention to the need for outdoor play and physical activity, Brenda Simon founded PLAYbyNature, an organization focused on re-introducing autonomous outdoor play back into the lives of children in the Toronto area.
